If you’re a cyclist, chances are the LOTOJA Classic is on your bucket list. This 206-mile amateur bicycle race stretches from Logan, Utah to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, offering stunning scenery and challenging terrain. It’s one of the longest one-day cycling races in the United States and attracts top-level racers and beginners alike. If you’re thinking about taking on LOTOJA next year, we’ve got you covered! Here are some things you should know about this once-in-a-lifetime ride.
History of the LOTOJA Classic
LOTOJA was started in 1983 by cyclists David Bern and Jeff Keller, who wanted a race that resembled a one-day European classic. The race’s first year featured seven cyclists and ran from Logan to a finish line in Jackson’s Town Square. Since then, it’s grown into one of the nation’s premier amateur cycling events and attracts thousands of riders from the United States and beyond. To win or even place in a LOTOJA category is a prestigious achievement.
The LOTOJA route is both breathtakingly beautiful and incredibly challenging. The race begins at Sunrise Cyclery bike shop in Logan, Utah, heads north into southeastern Idaho, and winds across western Wyoming. Along the way, cyclists must climb nearly 10,000 feet and tackle three mountain passes as they pedal to the finish line at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Participants will find a detailed course map on the event website.
From early season conditioning to pre-race peaking, your success at LOTOJA will be determined by your training and preparation. Online training schedules and programs are great resources that will help you get ready for race day. LOTOJA veterans also offer helpful tips for beginners, including:
- Participate in other races and events in the months leading up to LOTOJA.
- Ride within your limits, and don’t go too hard early on.
- Dress in layers so that you can stay dry and comfortable throughout the day.
- Eat and drink constantly! Keep your body hydrated and fueled with the right food.
