Most people know that Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is a wonderful place to visit year-round, but fall is truly the valley’s best-kept secret. Temperatures are mild, crowds are light, and there are tons of things to do and see beneath the Tetons. The landscape is especially breathtaking with vibrant hues of yellow, gold, and deep red. If you’re considering visiting Jackson Hole in the fall, let the Bentwood Inn be your guide! Here are some of our favorite ways to enjoy autumn in the Wild West.
What You’ll See in Jackson Hole in the Fall
September and October are solid fall months in Jackson Hole. Guests can expect cool nights, crisp mornings, and comfortable daytime temperatures that range from the high 50s to the low 70s. We suggest bringing a light jacket for afternoon activities and some heavier pieces of clothing for nighttime. When visiting the valley in November, be prepared to bundle up – this time of year is known for its cold winter temperatures and scattered snowstorms.
If you’re a fan of outdoor recreation, fall is the best time to visit Jackson Hole. Visitors can still enjoy many of the activities offered in the summertime including hiking, biking, fishing, and horseback riding. Wildlife viewing tours are also popular during this time of year, as animals migrate to their wintering grounds. Don’t forget to bring your camera!
One species is particularly active in Jackson Hole in the fall. The elk mating season, or “rut”, begins each September and is marked by the eerie calls of male elk looking for companionship. The cries are known as “bugling” and are a haunting combination of bellowing and squealing.
- Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival: Each September, national and international artists showcase their works in the streets and galleries of Jackson Hole. The 11-day Fall Arts Festival is a beloved attraction that features more than two dozen individual events including ranch tours, fashion shows, food tastings, and more.
- Jackson Hole Marathon: Runners can also enjoy fall in the Tetons at the Jackson Hole Marathon. Held annually in September, the event includes a full marathon, half marathon, and relay race with a celebratory party and awards ceremony at the finish line.
- Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival: The Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival is offered biennially in the fall and features nature films and programs that are focused on protecting wildlife and their habitats. The week-long festival also presents environmental education programs throughout the year including film screenings, lectures, and school projects.
