Jackson Hole in the Fall: What to Expect
September and October are ideal fall months in Jackson Hole. Guests can expect cool nights, crisp mornings, and comfortable daytime temperatures that range from the high 50s to the low 70s. We suggest bringing a light jacket for afternoon activities and some heavier layers for nighttime/evening exploring. When visiting the valley in November, be prepared to bundle up—this time of year is known for its cold winter temperatures and scattered snowstorms. No matter when you visit this fall, you’ll be treated to beautiful bursts of color and breathtaking Teton views!
If you’re a fan of outdoor recreation, you’ll fit right in here. For outdoorsmen (and outdoorswomen), fall is hands-down the best time to visit Jackson Hole. Visitors can still enjoy many of the activities offered in the summertime including hiking, biking, fishing, and horseback riding. Wildlife viewing tours are also popular during this time of year, as animals migrate to their wintering grounds. Don’t forget to bring your camera!
Fall is also elk-mating season, or “Rut.” This is a truly underrated time in Jackson Hole! It begins each September and is marked by the eerie calls of male elk—”bugling”— as they search for companionship. Hearing this haunting sound in person is a truly incredible experience!
- Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival: Each September, national and international artists showcase their works in the streets and galleries of Jackson Hole. The 11-day Fall Arts Festival is a beloved attraction that features more than two dozen individual events including ranch tours, fashion shows, food tastings, and more.
- Jackson Hole Marathon: Runners can also enjoy fall in the Tetons at the Jackson Hole Marathon. Held annually in September, the event includes a full marathon, half marathon, and relay race with a celebratory party and awards ceremony at the finish line.
- Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival: The Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival features nature films and programs focused on protecting wildlife and their habitats. The week-long festival also presents environmental education programs throughout the year including film screenings, lectures, and school projects.
